A common side effect of kidney disease is dehydration. Because your pet’s kidneys are not functioning at full capacity they will require additional fluids to help process toxins in their system. As the disease progresses your pet will drink more and more water to try to keep themselves hydrated. Eventually they will not be able to drink enough water and dehydration will become a concern.
Administering subcutaneous (or “Sub-Q”) fluids is often recommended by veterinarians as it is a cost-effective way to keep your pet hydrated.
